Dana White: Cain Velasquez Will Need 4 Weeks to Recover from Back Surgery

The back injury that forced Cain Velasquez to withdraw from UFC 196 apparently won’t keep the former heavyweight champion on the sidelines for long.

During a recent appearance on the ”Opie with Jim Norton” show, UFC President Dana White revealed that Velasquez will probably have a short timetable to heal after undergoing surgery.

“He’s got problems with a disc in his back, so he’s actually gonna have surgery, but the good part is it’s not gonna be long,” White said. “Probably after the surgery he’ll need four weeks to recover. That’s good news.”

Velasquez was slated to rematch Fabricio Werdum on Feb. 6 but pulled out of the contest on Sunday, citing concerns that “not addressing the problems with my sciatic nerve could have longer-term consequences.”

After Stipe Miocic was tabbed to replace Velasquez on short notice, Werdum withdrew from the headliner due to a back ailment of his own. As a result, the event was rebranded as UFC Fight Night, while UFC 197 on March 5 was changed to UFC 196.

White did not mention when he expected Velasquez to return to the Octagon. The American Kickboxing Academy product relinquished the heavyweight crown to Werdum at UFC 188 in June, falling via third-round guillotine choke.
