The Japanese promotion announced Tuesday that it will begin a super atomweight (108 pound) tournament on Oct. 15 at Marine Messe Fukuoka in Fukuoka, Japan. The bracket will continue during Rizin’s Dec. 29 and Dec. 31 events in Saitama, Japan.

“We are very excited to be able to hold the first ever women’s grand prix, and we believe that with having the total amount of 10 million Japanese yen prize money, this is the biggest women’s tournament in the world,” Rizin chairman Nobuyuki Sakakibara said in a release. “I hope that we could continue this for the next five, 10 years and look back at this event and say this was the beginning.”

Thus far, a clash between Rena Kubota and Andy Nguyen has been confirmed for the bracket, while Miyuu Yamamoto will square off against an as-yet-to-be announced opponent.

Kubota, 26, is unbeaten in four Rizin appearances, including a first-round knockout of Dora Perjes in her most recent appearance at Rizin 5 on April 18. All of her triumphs have come inside the distance.

Nguyen, the reigning King of the Cage atomweight champion, enters the bout on a three-fight winning streak. Most recently, the 35-year-old “Crasian” took a five-round verdict against Bi Nguyen at KOTC “Groundbreaking” on May 6.

Rizin’s Oct. 15 card will also include three more bouts in the opening round of the men’s bantamweight grand prix as well as a grappling match between Pride Fighting Championships legends Kazushi Sakuraba and Dan Henderson.
