Gustafsson Says It’s Best for Jon Jones to ‘End the ‘Sport’ if Positive Test Proves True

Like much of the mixed martial arts community, Alexander Gustafsson was disappointed to learn of Jon Jones potential anti-doping violation at UFC 214.

While the substance for which Jones tested positive for during an in-competition screening at on July 28 has not been formally revealed, TMZ Sports reported that the Jackson-Wink MMA member had the anabolic steroid Turinabol in his system and that he would be stripped of the light heavyweight belt. Jones defeated Daniel Cormier via third-round TKO in the UFC 214 headliner in Anaheim, Calif., on July 29 to regain the 205-pound title. He is entitled to a full review process before any sanctions are imposed by USADA or the California State Athletic Commission. UFC President Dana White has denied that the promotion has stripped Jones of the light heavyweight championship.

“Very hard to say something right now before we know the whole story,” Gustafsson told mmabetz.se. “We’ll wait and see what the B test says. Should it prove to be true, it’s a pity for our whole sport, sorry for DC who lost his belt against him, sorry for all his fans.”

Gustafsson had more to gain than most from Jones’ presence in the promotion. The 6-foot-5 Swede gave Jones arguably the toughest test of his career at UFC 165 in September 2013, taking an early lead on the scorecards before losing a five-round decision. A Jones-Gustafsson rematch was one of the possibilities reportedly being discussed for UFC 218 in Detroit on Dec. 2. As a second time offender, Jones could be facing a four-year suspension if it is proven that he did test positive for a banned substance.

“It’s sad for me as well if it’s true. If there’s somebody I have been looking forward to fighting it’s him. Revenge in that fight is what I wanted,” Gustafsson said. “Am I surprised? No, nothing about that man surprises me anymore. But I do not want to judge him yet, not until we know everything. But if it’s true, then it would be best for him to end the sport.”
