Colby Covington Says UFC Guaranteed his Safety for UFC 224 in Brazil

Controversial Ultimate Fighting Championship talent Colby Covington returns to Brazil for his next assignment, where he’ll take on former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.

The fight is for the interim welterweight title, which is set for UFC 224 on May 12 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event was confirmed by MMA Fighting after BJPenn.com first reported that it was in the works a number of weeks ago.

Covington’s last visit to Brazil was memorable for all the wrong reasons, despite his win against Demian Maia. During the post-fight interview, Covington (13-1) referred to the Brazilian crowd as “filthy animals” and called Brazil a "dump." Needless to say it did not go over well with the crowd, as Covington was reportedly teamed with armed guards outside his hotel room as officials feared for his safety.

The return to Brazil is unusual as Covington himself said after his last that he probably won’t fight again in Brazil.

Covington talked with MMA Fighting about the announcement and believes despite it being labelled as an interim, he feels as if he’s fighting for the real thing.

“You can call it an interim, but everyone knows [Tyron] Woodley ain’t coming back when they put that belt around my waist,” Covington said. “And they are paying me like it’s a title fight.”

Covington has won five straight and is 8-1 inside the Octagon since he made his debut in August 2014. While he is no doubt a skilled fighter, he has gained more notoriety for making headlines with his brazen disregard for all other fighters in the UFC, including its fans.

“UFC has guaranteed my safety. Only security concern is gonna be when they lock RDA up and he has to stand across the cage from 170 pounds of raw American steel and sex appeal.”

“May 12, I put all the super villains that you nerds read about in your comic books to shame,” Covington added. “I’m taking over the world and RDA sure as hell can’t stop me.”

His opponent in Dos Anjos (28-9) has gone 3-0 since he moved up from lightweight to welterweight with wins over Tarec Saffiedine, Neil Magny and Robbie Lawler.
