Daniel Cormier Reacts to Jon Jones’ Latest Message: ‘It Takes a Lot of Drugs to Think Like Him’

It’s no secret that Daniel Cormier would like a third crack at Jon Jones after coming up short in their first two meetings.

The reigning UFC light heavyweight champion recently reiterated that sentiment during an interview with MMAFighting.com.

“I want to fight Jon Jones. I do. I still feel I can win,” he said. “I know that I’ve lost twice. The last fight I got kicked in the head. I feel like we were having a good fight. I feel like every fight’s been good, and I feel like if we fought a third time it’d be even better. I want to fight Jon Jones. That’ll never change.”

Jones, who is still awaiting discipline from USADA for a failed drug test at UFC 214, took notice of the interview and issued a succinct response on Twitter: “Come get me baby.”

Cormier was asked about Jones’ reaction during a recent appearance on the UFC “Unfiltered” podcast. The American Kickboxing Academy product could only laugh and agree with hosts Matt Serra and Phoenix Carnevale that it was a strange response.

He’s a weird f---king guy. He’s a weird cat, man,” Cormier said. “Let me tell you something. To try to delve into the mind of Jon Jones, you can’t do it without some help. It takes a lot of drugs to think like him. Unless you’re willing to be crazy high, then you’ll think like him. You can’t think like him just normally.”

Cormier was stopped in the third round by Jones in their rematch at UFC 214, but the result was overturned to a no contest by the California State Athletic due to Jones’ positive test for turinabol. Jones could be facing as long as a four-year suspension as a second-time offender, depending on USADA’s ruling. Regardless of that result, Cormier believes he should have beaten Jones that night last July.

“I just don’t feel like that was the first guy I’ve ever fought on steroids, and I beat all the rest of them,” Cormier said. “So I should have just beat him.”

With Jones’ future in limbo, Cormier will challenge Stipe Miocic for heavyweight gold in a champion vs. champion superfight at UFC 226 on July 7. “DC” expects to be properly motivated as that date nears.

I feel like my best training camps that I’ve ever done were for Jon Jones because I knew of the threat in the fight and I feel like this one will match that, if not exceed it, because I understand the threat in Stipe Miocic,” he said.
