Heavyweight King Stipe Miocic Feels the UFC is Finally Paying What He’s Worth

It seems Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic has finally won over Dana White regarding his long-standing issue regarding compensation.

Miocic, 35, takes on light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier this Saturday in a heavy weight super fight in the biggest bout of his career.

The part-time firefighter faced the highly-fancied Francis Ngannou in January this year at UFC 220. Miocic defeated the Cameroonian over five rounds via unanimous decision and broke the record for most consecutive UFC heavyweight title defenses (3).

Prior to that heavyweight title fight at UFC 220, the UFC saw Ngannou as the more marketable fighter and therefore focused their promotion towards him. Miocic’s performance against Ngannou that night as well as his appearance on the recent series of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 27 seems to have made UFC officials think twice about his pay.

Miocic told reporters on Monday that he is extremely pleased with his pay check for the UFC 226 bout (via MMA Fighting):

“Dana and I, we talked that stuff out and it worked out great,” Miocic said.

When asked if his payday against Cormier would be the biggest of his career, “100 percent.”

As well as his coaching gig on The Ultimate Fighter 27 (TUF 27), he’s also starred in a Modelo commercial which was shown during the NBA and NHL playoffs.

Miocic understands why it took the UFC a while to get behind him, pointing out the change in ownership as a potential stumbling block.

“A lot has changed,” Miocic said. “I think it had a lot to do with the change in the company too, they were stuck in their transition. I’m just, I was stuck when they sold the company, they were looking for what’s good for them, but I understand that.

“They spent a lot of money, they spent $4 billion it’s not like ‘ahh, sure guys.’ It’s a little bit different than that. They made it right and it was all good.”
