Michael Chiesa Confirms ‘Wheels are in Motion’ in Legal Battle Against Conor McGregor

Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight Michael Chiesa was scheduled to face Anthony Pettis in a 155-pound fight in April at UFC 223 when he was forced off the card due to an injury as a result of an attack by fellow UFC fighter Conor McGregor.

McGregor and a group of men stormed the Barclays Center carpark and the Irishman threw a loading dolly at the bus carrying the fighters in the blue corner, who were attending a media day. The dolly smashed one of the windows where Chiesa was sitting, which cut his forehead.

Chiesa was removed from the card and the fight with Pettis was scrapped and rebooked for UFC 226 which took place last Saturday. “The Maverick” missed weight for the fight, surrendering 30 percent of his fight purse and to compound the issue he lost via submission.

As a result of the missed weight, Chiesa said it was his last fight at lightweight.

On Monday he appeared on “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show” and talked about his brutal weight cut and provided an update on the legal situation from the McGregor bus attack.

“The wheels are in motion. I’m doing what’s been advised to me and yes, there is a legal battle against McGregor.”

McGregor is currently working on a plea deal to avoid jail time, which is the reason the UFC refused to comment on the Irishman’s return to the Octagon.

Chiesa will argue that McGregor’s actions in April affected him financially, firstly by potential earnings from the fight with Pettis and secondly, considering his status in the lightweight division, would have been the favorite to replace Max Holloway in his lightweight title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov. That fight was eventually given to Al Iaquinta instead, who stated he was paid very well.
