Last Saturday night, the much hyped rematch between former Ultimate Fighting Championshiplightweight king Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier took place at UFC on Fox 30 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Poirier put on a striking masterclass, finishing Alvarez in the second round.

Like their first fight, which ended in a no contest due to Alvarez landing illegal knees to Poirier's head as a downed opponent, the fight on Saturday night had a moment of controversy. During the second round, Alvarez had Poirier pinned against the cage in a dominant position and landed an illegal “12 to 6” elbow to the shoulder of Poirier. While the strike didn’t hurt Poirier, it was illegal and referee Marc Goddard stood the pair up.

It was later reported that the decision to use the elbow came from Alvarez’s coach Mark Henry, who was gesturing the technique cage side.

Henry appeared on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show to defend the action as well and said he took full responsibility for the elbow (via MMAJunkie.com):

“On a blame scale of 1 to 10, it’s 100 on me. He definitely did what he saw me do. Definitely my fault. I definitely wasn’t meaning to be cheap at all. I’m not stupid. I’ve been doing this a long time. I know he can’t do a top elbow. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of fights that I’ve done, every single time they say you can’t do that elbow. Maybe I should have went over different ways to do something.”

Henry also told Helwani he had no issue with the referee standing both fighters up which was ultimately Alvarez’s downfall as Poirier strung together a fight-ending combination right after the decision. Henry said he would have preferred a warning as the strike didn’t connect to Poirier’s head.

“I’ve done a ton fights with (Goddard) as a ref, and if Goddard was in the (cage) again, I’d have 100 percent faith in him,” Henry said. “He’s a great ref.”

The fight on Saturday was The Underground King’s last on his UFC contract, although he spoke to reporters before the fight stating that he was confident he would get another deal which was more to his liking after knocking back an original offer.
