Alexander Gustafsson Back Training After Minor Injury, Wants Spot on UFC 229 Card

Alexander Gustafsson seems to have recovered from the “minor injury” that forced him out of UFC 227, and now the Swede is ready to make a swift return to action.

“I’ve been having some issues with my back thigh. Small stuff,” Gustafsson recently told MMAViking.com. “I’m staying busy, I can train. I feel good. I had some problems before my fight. I was scheduled to fight in August and I got injured. S—t happens. I’m here and I”m training.

“It was a s—t injury. It’s not worth mentioning. But it’s going good now.”

The former light heavyweight title challenger was originally paired with Luke Rockhold at UFC 227 before Rockhold pulled out of the fight. Gustafsson was later matched with Volkan Oezdemir, but “No Time” was forced to withdraw due to a broken nose. Shortly thereafter, “The Mauler” exited the card with his own issues.

Gustafsson isn’t too concerned about who he faces, but he would like to return to the Octagon in the next few months. Ideally, he would be able to compete at UFC 229 on Oct. 6, which is headlined by the blockbuster lightweight clash between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.

“We’re going back and forth [with the UFC]. We’re talking to them all the time,” Gustafsson said. “I want to fight. Hopefully I’ll fight [Oct. 6]. Maybe I’ll fight in November. I have no clue right now. We’re looking for an opponent. We talked to the UFC. We all know the beast is coming back.

“I’ll fight anyone. I would love to fight Oct. 6. It’s a good card. Conor and Khabib. I would love to fight on that card. But I’m open minded; I’m flexible.”
