Kamaru Usman: Everyone Wants To See Me Beat Up Colby Covington

Kamaru Usman may have vaulted himself into the title picture last weekend, but there’s one last contender he wouldn’t mind taking out on his way to the top.

Usman’s dominant display against former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 28 finale prompted Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White to suggest it could be him rather than former interim titleholder Colby Covington who gets the next shot at 170-pound champ Tyron Woodley.

Usman (14-1), who is on a 13-fight win streak, was a recent guest on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show and said while it would be good to challenge Woodley for the title but he sees a bout against the outspoken Covington as a bigger fight as he believes people from all over the world want to see “Chaos” beaten up.

“I’ve said it before that it would be good to take the title away from Tyron because Tyron has been a long champion, defended the belt several times and he is the guy,” Usman said. “So of course it would be great for me to be able to dethrone him. But it would feel a whole hell of a lot better for me to beat the sh*t out of Colby ‘Duckington.’ It would feel a whole hell of a lot better to beat that clown.

“I think it’s actually a bigger fight because who in the world doesn’t want to see me beat him up,” Usman added. “Everybody wants to see it. I get [direct messages on social media] daily from Brazilians, people all the world asking me to beat the guy up. It would be sweet. But hey, a champion’s a champion, so once I get that belt wrapped around me, that feeling itself is going to be good enough for me.”

Both Usman and Covington recorded dominant performances over dos Anjos and could actually end up fighting each other for the No. 1 contender spot, especially if Woodley is unavailable to defend his belt early next year.
