Frankie Edgar Wants Holloway and 'Most Popular Guy of My Era' McGregor, Before Retirement

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight champion Frankie Edgar is eager to get back into the title picture again after sitting out most of 2018 recovering from a bicep injury, and he has some big names on his wish list.

Edgar last fought in April at UFC Fight Night 128 where he took on the always game Cub Swanson. Edgar outpointed his opponent on the night earning him the victory via unanimous decision. The win over Swanson edged him closer to another shot at the featherweight title for which he has already fought on two prior occasions, losing both times to Jose Aldo.

At 37 years of age, the Edgar is realistic about the amount of time he has left in the sport and wants to make the most of it. Speaking to TMZ, Edgar laid out some of the matchups he would like to see himself in.

”I’m hoping I get Max [Holloway],” Edgar said. “I’m hoping Max sticks around at [145] and we get to finally square off. I think it makes the most sense. We were supposed to link up, and I think a lot of people talk about that matchup. I don’t think he’s fought someone like myself. I could definitely do some different things in there that Ortega can’t. So that’s what I’m gunning for.

“[If not Holloway], maybe Conor [McGregor]’s free. Conor wants to get down and fight. We were supposed to fight a long time ago too. If I’m not fighting for the belt, then I guess Conor’s the next best thing.”

Back in December 2015, Edgar was the next fighter in line after McGregor’s flash knockout of Aldo at 145 pounds although the Irishman eventually moved up a division to capture the 155 pound belt. Edgar says he still wants the chance to share the Octagon with “The Notorious” as it’ll be something he can tell his grandkids one day.

“He’s the most popular guy of my era. Let’s be real, he is,” Edgar continued. “It’ll be a shame if I retire down the road and I get my kids and grandkids asking me if I ever fought Conor McGregor and I get to say no. I wanna say yeah.”

The UFC has yet to announce Holloway’s next opponent, or whether that fight will be 145 or 155 pounds, but Edgar’s chances of getting his title shot at 145 may have received a boost this week when the UFC booked Renato Carneiro, another viable title challenger, against Jose Aldo for next year.
