Viviane Araujo vs. Talita Bernardo

Round 1

Kicking off the early prelims is a bantamweight match between Talita Bernardo (6-3) and UFC debutante Viviane Araujo (6-1). The referee is Fernando Portella. The two women start off in matching orthodox stances, trading jabs and kicks. The difference in size between Bernardo and Araujo, normally a strawweight, is stark. A right low kick by Bernardo early takes Araujo’s feet out from under her. Araujo lands a hard body kick. Two minutes in, Araujo is the noticeably faster woman. Araujo looks confident, bouncing on her toes and bobbing her head while throwing quick, slapping low kicks. With a minute left, Bernardo throws a kick that Araujo catches, dumping Bernardo to the canvas. She allows Bernardo to stand. Bernardo drops levels and shoots a double-leg. Araujo uses an underhook to reverse and land on top. She sets up in Bernardo’s guard, but the horn sounds seconds later.

Sherdog Scores

Ben Duffy scores the round: 10-9 Araujo
Tyler Treese scores the round: 10-9 Araujo
Cole Shelton scores the round: 10-9 Araujo

Round 2

Araujo is the aggressor to open the second round, moving forward and throwing frequent low kicks. She catches Bernardo with a stiff right that swivels the larger woman’s jaw. A moment later, Bernardo goes down off-balance and lingers, looking to get Araujo to grapple, but Araujo lets her stand. Bernardo shoots for another takedown. Araujo defends and threatens to take the back before they disengage and stand. With a minute left, Araujo ducks under a punching combination, dumping Bernardo with a nice double-leg of her own. A moment later she stands. Bernardo stands as well, and the horn sounds a moment later.

Sherdog Scores

Ben Duffy scores the round: 10-9 Araujo
Tyler Treese scores the round: 10-9 Bernardo
Cole Shelton scores the round: 10-9 Bernardo

Round 3

Perhaps feeling a sense of urgency, Bernardo marches forward to start the final frame, throwing straights and hooks with ill intent. Araujo catches Bernardo coming in with a gigantic right hook that flattens her instantly. Referee Portella dives in to stave off any unnecessary coffin nails and Viviane Araujo makes a sizzling UFC debut, potentially putting several divisions on notice, but tells interviewer Jon Anik that she plans to go back to strawweight immediately.

The Official Result

Viviane Araujo def. Talita Bernardo R3 0:48 via TKO (Punch)

Raoni Barcelos vs. Carlos Huachin

Round 1

Featherweights Barcelos (13-1) and the debuting Huachin (10-3-1) take the cage, with referee Eduardo Herdy overseeing. Barcelos stalks forward on the Peruvian, who gives ground with left hand cocked, looking for a southpaw counter. We have our first “Uh! Vai morrer!” chant of the evening, which at least beats the hell out of “whoo.” A minute and a half in, Huachin catches Barcelos coming in with a counter left hook, then another. Barcelos lands a combo of his own. Halfway through the round, Huachin looks sharper on the feet, timing Barcelos’ entries and punishing them. Barcelos lands a big right kick to the body. With a minute left, Barcelos lands a right hook-left high kick combo. Barcelos lands a hard left low kick at the clapper, and it’s the last significant offense of the round.

Sherdog Scores

Ben Duffy scores the round: 10-9 Huachin
Tyler Treese scores the round: 10-9 Barcelos
Cole Shelton scores the round: 10-9 Huachin

Round 2

Barcelos comes forward, feinting. He drops for a takedown, but Huachin shucks him off and circles away. Barcelos catches Huachin with a short right hook as they both come forward, dropping him to his butt. He pounces, throwing punches with both hands, but Huachin moves and defends well as the referee looks on closely. Barcelos moves to mount, then to the back. He hunts for a rear-naked choke, but Huachin spins into him. Barcelos grabs a guillotine, loses it, then moves to the back again. The extended sequence ends with Barcelos back in mount, too high for an arm-triangle, but flattening Huachin with his hips. Huachin regains half guard, but Barcelos has him against the fence, throwing punches, then elbows. With under 15 seconds left, the referee jumps in and stops the punishment. A tick early or not, the stoppage win runs Barcelos' win streak to seven straight, the last three in the UFC.

The Official Result

Raoni Barcelos def. Carlos Huachin R2 4:49 via TKO (Elbows and Punches)

Luana Carolina vs. Priscila Cachoeira

Round 1

The final fight of the ESPN+ early prelims is another all-Brazilian affair, with Cachoeira (8-2) and promotional debutante Carolina (5-1) squaring off at flyweight. The referee is Fernando Portella. Cachoeira catches Carolina with a hard knee up the middle in the opening seconds. Moments later, she tags her with a one-two to the head, rocking her enough to induce her to initiate a clinch. Cachoeira is coming forward throwing, while Carolina circles out and looks to clinch when her opponent gets within range. In one such clinch, Carolina nails Cachoeira with a hard knee to the face. Cachoeira comes up with her face noticeably reddened. Halfway through the round, Cachoeira lands a shot that has Carolina running away for a second, back turned. Carolina lands a head kick, but it’s so slow that Cachoeira is able to catch it and trip her other foot. With a minute left, Carolina is bleeding from under her right eye. The round ends with Cachoeira giving chase.

Sherdog Scores

Ben Duffy scores the round: 10-9 Carolina
Tyler Treese scores the round: 10-9 Carolina
Cole Shelton scores the round: 10-9 Carolina

Round 2

The second round continues with Cachoeira continuing to earn her “Zombie” nickname, coming forward but taking a lot of hard shots as she does so. Carolina is being forced to retreat awkwardly from the sheer forward speed of her opponent, but doing a solid job of using the clinch to slow her down. Carolina smacks the charging Cachoeira with a big head kick, dropping her. She’s all over Cachoeira, looking for a kimura, then for a mounted triangle. Cachoeira defends, regains her wits and slips out. As they’re returning to their feet, Carolina hits Cachoeira with an illegal knee while she’s still grounded. Referee Portella stops the action, warns Carolina and gives Cachoeira a moment to recover. When they engage again, Cachoeira sticks Carolina with a right hand, then is pulled to the ground by Carolina, who locks up a front headlock. She has the guillotine choke, adjusts her grip and position, but doesn’t have it. They scramble and Carolina ends up in mount. She throws some punches and elbows, but Cachoeira is able to slip out the back door and they return to their feet, where the round ends.

Sherdog Scores

Ben Duffy scores the round: 10-9 Carolina
Tyler Treese scores the round: 10-9 Carolina
Cole Shelton scores the round: 10-9 Carolina

Round 3

Carolina goes back to the high kick to open the third round, landing two within the first 45 seconds. She’s tagging her with the left high kick nearly at will. Carolina nails Cachoeira with a spinning back fist that smacks loudly in the arena but doesn’t appear to faze her too badly. Halfway through the round the action has slowed, but the dynamic is the same: Cachoeira marching forward, taking two strikes to give one. With 90 seconds left, Carolina grabs a standing guillotine from the clinch, but Cachoeira extricates herself easily. Cachoeira is still coming forward, still throwing, but doesn’t appear to have any new ideas. With 30 seconds left, a Carolina jab snaps the other woman’s head back. The horn sounds, ending what should be an easy decision win for the UFC newcomer.

Sherdog Scores

Ben Duffy scores the round: 10-9 Carolina (30-27 Carolina)

He throws another hook that misses by two feet. Halfway through, Guida’s motion has changed from advancing to circling. Penn nails him with a left hook. Halfway through the round, Guida flashes a left head kick, then rushes in behind it, looking for the takedown. He hustles Penn to the fence, pressing him there, throwing short punches and elbows. Penn spins away and escapes, and they reset. Guida tags him with another right low kick, this time spinning Penn halfway around. Guida hits Penn with a hard right that stumbles him, comes in behind it and pushes him to the fence. With 15 seconds left, he scoops Penn up at the hips and dumps him effortlessly. A minute in, he clinches and runs Penn to the fence. Guida is throwing short punches to the midsection and elbows upstairs. Guida lets him off the fence, then steps forward and lands a wide left hook that sends Penn stumbling, more off balance and tired than hurt. Guida gives chase, clinching against the fence again. Under a minute and a half left and Guida is just smothering Penn, giving him no quarter. With 45 seconds left, Penn escapes and promptly nails Guida with a hard one-two. Guida throws another left high kick that glances off Penn’s guard. The horn sounds.

Alves throws a hard right low kick, then a moment later goes high with the left. Alves throws another right leg kick, which Moraes checks. Two minutes in, Moraes may not have landed a significant strike yet. Alves lands another hard leg kick. Moraes’ left leg is bright red. Moraes lands a looping right hook that sends Alves stumbling back for a moment, but he comes forward again, continuing to hack away at the lead left leg of Moraes. Alves mixes in a front snap kick at the lead leg, then goes back to the outside kick. With a minute left, Moraes signals that he has been poked in the eye, and referee Maia gives him a moment to recover. They return to exchanging on the feet. Less than 30 seconds left, and Alves jumps in with a flying knee feint, then tags Moraes with a straight right behind it. The horn sounds.

Alves’s volume has decreased at the halfway point of the round, but he is still throwing more strikes than Moraes. Alves whiffs on a lead left hook, allowing Moraes into close range, but they collide and bounce off each other. Under a minute left, and Alves is circling, throwing jabs and another low kick. Alves walks him down, throwing combinations. He lands a hard left hook to the head. Moraes backs into the fence and Alves hits him with a one-two upstairs. Under 90 seconds left, and Alves throws another right low kick that nearly takes both of Moraes’ legs out from under him. With Moraes against the fence, Alves leaps in with a flying double knee that lands, then a standing elbow. Moraes is dazed, and in a “FINISH HIM!” moment, Alves takes a half-second to wind up a huge uppercut that blows Moraes away, leaving him folded in a heap at the base of the fence. Sensational knockout by Warlley Alves to punctuate a dominant performance.

Round 1

Lightweights Holobaugh (17-6, 1 N/C) and Moises (11-3) face off in a matchup of DWTNCS alums in need of a win. Referee Marc Goddard makes his first appearance of the evening. Holobaugh grabs a single-leg in the first 15 seconds, using it to run Moises to the fence. The Brazilian defends well, however, and Holobaugh gives it up. They return to circling. Moments later, Holobaugh goes for a single, once again on the right leg, and Moises once again defends. They disengage, and Moises surprises Holobaugh by dropping for a single-leg takedown of his own, running Holobaugh to the canvas. Holobaugh grabs a front headlock on the way down, but Moises moves to the opposite side and Holobaugh wisely lets go. Moises lands in full guard, then passes to half-guard. The first few exchanges are tentative, with Nogueira in southpaw stance to Spann’s orthodox. Spann rushes forward, scoops Nogueira up and dumps him to the ground, landing in side control. Spann moves to half guard and sets up an arm-triangle choke, which Nogueira defends expertly. A moment later, Noguiera sweeps and escapes to his feet. They clash immediately, with both men swinging wildly and landing. Bethe Correia vs. Irene Aldana

Round 1

The pay-per-view opens with a bantamweight matchup between Irene Aldana (9-4) and former title challenger Bethe Correia (10-3-1), whose punishment for missing weight by a whopping five pounds appears to be promotion to the main card. Eduardo Herdy is the referee. In spite of Correia’s weight miss, Aldana is by far the larger-looking woman in the cage. Aldana is the more mobile fighter in the early going, circling and jabbing as “Pitbull” stakes out the center of the Octagon. A minute and a half in, neither woman has landed much of consequence, but Correia has not solved the reach advantage of Aldana, who is keeping her at bay with jabs and one-twos. Correia moves forward, throwing winging hooks that clatter off the taller woman’s guard. With two minutes left, Correia is growing more aggressive, showing a willingness to eat the jab and straight right in order to land her own punches. At least some of them have gotten through, as Aldana’s mouth is reddened. At the 30-second mark, Aldana nails Correia with a right cross as she moves forward. The horn sounds.

Sherdog Scores

Ben Duffy scores the round: 10-9 Aldana
Tyler Treese scores the round: 10-9 Aldana

Aldana is still connecting with the jab; Correia is simply walking through it and throwing her own punches. Correia throws a right low kick that lands solidly. Correia is looking extremely confident halfway through the round, while Aldana seems to be taken out of her game, moving backwards and looking confused. Correia lands a hard right hook that stumbles Aldana. Correia clinches with Aldana against the fence, looking to throw knees, but Aldana keeps her posture and shucks her off. At the 10-second clapper, Aldana explodes with a five-punch combo that lands with authority. The horn sounds.

Correia drops levels and drives for a takedown, but Aldana evades and moves to Correia’s back. She tries to sink the hooks but is too high on Correia’s back. Aldana switches to an armbar, goes belly down and Correia taps! Impressive work by Irene Aldana, and it’s possible Correia ran into a knee during the takedown attempt, as she comes up with blood streaming down her face.

The Official Result

Irene Aldana def. Bethe Correia R3 3:24 via Submission (Armbar)

Thiago Alves vs. Laureano Staropoli

Round 1

Brazilian veteran Alves (28-13) takes on Argentinian up-and-comer Laureano Staropoli (8-1) in a welterweight showdown, with Osiris Maia set to oversee the goings-on. It’s Staropoli coming forward in the early going, pursuing, feinting and throwing a couple of long stance-switching kicks that land harmlessly on Alves’ guard. Over a minute in, Alves has not thrown any strikes with intent, instead watching Staropoli’s exotic array of kicks and stance shifts. Halfway through the round, Staropoli throws a spinning back kick and is thrown off balance by the advancing Alves. He stumbles, hops back, but Alves does not pursue. A minute and a half left, Alves still has not pulled the trigger with any serious punches. There is a small cut on his forehead. Alves throws a right inside leg kick that lands. Just before the clapper, he throws a left kick to the body, then a moment later, a counter right that stumbles Staropoli. The horn sounds.

He gets to his feet and they disengage. Staropoli throws a spinning back elbow that misses as Alves stands. Both men throwing with intent now, Alves with his bread-and-butter jabs, one-twos and low kicks; Staropoli still launching kicks and combos while sliding from orthodox to southpaw and back. Staropoli lands a long, stance-swtiching straight right and takes a right low kick in return. Under two minutes left, and Staropoli is landing the more and harder shots. Alves tags Staropoli with a hard right hook that hurts him. Alves gives chase, landing more punches, but there’s less than a minute left and Staropoli isn’t hurt that badly. Round 1

A high-stakes featherweight showdown kicks off as former champion Jose Aldo (28-4) takes on red-hot contender Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski (19-1). The crowd reaction for Aldo is thunderous. Marc Goddard is the referee. Both men are in orthodox stance, circling. Volkanovski is the busier man, feinting and sliding laterally as Aldo pivots deliberately, right hand cocked. Volkanovski throws a left inside leg kick that lands. The tension is enough that play-by-play announcer Jon Anik seems to rush through his live ad read for vodka, lest he be caught mid-sentence when something explodes. Aldo is moving forward, forcing the younger man to give ground. Aldo throws a leg kick, then a body shot. Volkanovski now advances, throwing some darting jabs and straights that get through Aldo’s guard. Halfway through the round, Volkanovski is pushing forward. He throws another inside leg kick. Aldo catches the Australian coming in with a job that snaps his head back. Two minutes in, Aldo catches an inadvertent eye poke that leaves his eye visibly red. Referee Goddard separates them, calls in the doctor and gives the former champ a moment to recorder. When they engage again, Volkanovski soon drives Aldo to the fence, where he throws a series of knees to the leg of the Brazilian. Aldo pushes off and takes Volkanovski’s back momentarily. Volkanovski reverses and they disengage. At the clapper, the two are exchanging sharp single shots and combinations. The horn sounds.

As they jockey for position there, he employs a brief fence grab that draws the Rio crowd’s ire. Volkanovski is suffocating Aldo against the fence. They break off and engage in the center of the Octagon again, and it’s still the Australian who seems just a bit sharper, just a step ahead. He forces Aldo to the fence with 90 seconds left. He pins Aldo there, landing short knees that may not be doing much damage, but Aldo is offering nothing in return. 30 seconds left, and they are still in the same position. The fight ends. Aldo hoists his hands in the air, but it certainly seems he’s about to lose his first non-title fight in approximately 400 years.

Cannonier moves forward in orthodox stance, bouncing on his toes and throwing single jabs and low kicks. Silva, in southpaw stance, gives ground and flicks out jabs and body kicks. Cannonier lands another hard low kick. Silva answers with a body kick that makes the crowd erupt. Halfway through, Cannonier is backing Silva up but throwing little offense. Cannonier forces a clinch against the fence. Silva obliges, throwing short, level elbows. They disengage. With a minute left, Cannonier darts in with a body jab. Silva goes on the offensive, backing Cannonier up and trying to walk him into the fence. Cannonier throws a right inside leg kick that lands on Silva’s right knee, and Silva goes down. Referee Dean rushes in and pulls Cannonier away before he can land any follow-up strikes. Silva is on his back in apparent agony as Cannonier walks around with arm aloft in triumph, perhaps the only happy person in the venue at the moment.

Round 2

The second round opens, and Namajunas resumes circling and nailing Andrade with her jab. Andrade rushes forward, getting inside the taller champ’s reach with punches, but Namajunas resets and gets back to her range. Namajunas remains a step ahead. Andrade rushes Namajunas to the fence and looks for the lift. Once again, Namajunas ties up the arm. This time, though, Andrade gets a high-crotch lift. She elevates Namajunas and brings her down, with the champ still holding the arm. Namajunas is knocked senseless by the impact. Referee Goddard is between them in a flash and Jessica Andrade is your new UFC strawweight champion. Incredible display of power. Sensational finish for Andrade in a fight in which she had been getting outclassed.
