Zak Cummings Looking to Hand Trevin Giles His First Loss at UFC Rochester

Zak Cummings believes he's much better at middleweight and that will translate to giving Trevin Giles his first professional loss this Saturday at UFC Rochester.

Cummings moved back up to 185 pounds for his last fight back in December, where he beat Trevor Smith by unanimous decision. Now, the Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran has another tough fight ahead of him in taking a rising prospect in Giles. The 34-year-old is confident he has what it takes to beat him after watching tape on his opponent. The Missouri native understands what he needs to do to leave Rochester with a win and plans on doing it.

"If I go in there and perform what I am capable of, I don't see any way he beats me," Cummings said to Sherdog.com. "I've been in this game a long time. I have a lot of power, good striker, very capable on the ground. I think I can win the fight anywhere. When you are undefeated you have that false sense of confidence that you are unbeatable. I've given lots of guys their first loss, so the undefeated thing doesn't really bother me at all. [It] just basically says he hasn't fought anybody at that level. I think I'm a massive step up in competition for him."

Something going against "The Problem" is the fact that he hasn't fought since 2017. The 26-year-old took time off to further his law enforcement career and attend a police academy. Now, the question is, will ring rust be a factor in this fight? According to Cummings, he isn't sure how his opponent's time off will impact the bout, but he is preparing for the best Giles there is.

"I mean, you can look at it both ways. I don't think he would have taken a fight if he wasn't going to be prepared for it," explained Cummings. "I have had injuries that have kept me away that [amount of] time. It definitely takes a little time to get your bearing. I don't fully believe in ring rust, but it takes a little while to find your timing. He went through the police academy which is pretty intensive. I know he wouldn't have taken this fight if he wasn't going to be ready and prepared."

Ultimately, Cummings believes he is too much too soon for the prospect. He has been in this game for a long time and believes he has the advantage no matter where it goes. "I see me going out there and using a lot of angles," said the UFC veteran. "He has a good jab, fast hands. I'm going to have to make sure my feet are moving, and I can't stand still so he can hit me. Just have a lot of movement and once I find my range just pick him apart. I have a lot of tools. Kind of see where we go from there. If I put him in the back I think he will be in trouble. If I go on my back, I have some nasty submissions."

After breaking his orbital bone in his last fight, Cummings is eager to extend his winning streak to two and leave this fight uninjured. The veteran is more than confident in his abilities, and with a win here, wants to start fighting ranked opponents next and work his way up to a title shot.

"The name doesn't matter. I just think if I get my second win in a row, they may think I can actually be a contender for this weight class," he concluded. "I did well at welterweight. I just think it is one step closer to where I want to be."
