Rashad Evans Believes Jones-Cormier At Heavyweight 'Would Be A Totally Different Fight'

The rivalry between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier is one of the most intense of all time, involving the greatest light heavyweight ever and arguably the greatest heavyweight ever.

Cormier has faced Jones twice and lost in both attempts, the first by unanimous decision back at UFC 182 in January of 2015 before being knocked out in their second bout at UFC 214 in July 2017, although the latter outcome was overturned after Jones tested positive for the banned substance turinabol.

While Cormier came up short in the cage against Jones at light heavyweight, he is also one of the most accomplished heavyweights of all time, sporting an undefeated record and having captured both the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix and UFC heavyweight titles. Now that Cormier’s decorated career has almost come to a close, he’s eyeing a final fight against Jones before he bows out of the sport.

While a third fight at 205 pounds would surely see Jones as the betting favorite, a bout in Cormier’s preferred heavyweight division would be a much more interesting proposition, according to former UFC light heavyweight champion and 2019 UFC Hall of Fame inductee Rashad Evans. Evans was a guest on SiriusXM and provided his thoughts on a trilogy fight if it were to take place in the heavyweight division.

“I think if Jon Jones did fight ‘DC’ at heavyweight it’d be a totally different fight,” Evans said. “I think Jon Jones knows that -- he is a very smart fighter. I think he has a better chance of beating ‘DC’ at 205 because when ‘DC’ makes 205, it’s not only the fact that he’s got to face Jon Jones’ skills -- because that’s one thing in itself.

“But then he has to worry about facing himself [in] a physical sense,” Evans added. “How much did he deplete his body during the weight cut? That seems to be what causes the damage later on in the fight when he can’t absorb a shot to the head, because he doesn’t have enough fluid in his head because he’s dehydrated. That’s what happens when you cut too much weight.

“At heavyweight, he is a little bit more durable,” Evans continued. “He has this strength at heavyweight that he doesn’t have at 205. It’d be interesting to see the matchup at heavyweight because I guarantee it’d be a lot different."

Before a potential trilogy fight can happen, both men have some tough tests ahead of them to overcome with Jones set to defend his light heavyweight title against Brazilian knockout artist Thiago Santos on July 6 at UFC 239. Cormier faces off against the man he defeated to win the heavyweight title, former champion Stipe Miocic, on Aug. 17 at UFC 241.
