Aspen Ladd releases statement after UFC Fight Night 193 weight miss: 'Mother nature comes into play'

Aspen Ladd has shed some light as to why she will not be fighting this Saturday.

At Friday’s UFC Fight Night 193 official weigh-ins, Ladd (9-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) missed weight for her scheduled bout against Macy Chiasson. Her weigh-in turned into a bit of spectacle, as she stepped on the scale multiple times with and without clothing.

As she shook and struggled to raise her arms inside the promotion’s privacy box, Ladd weighed 137 pounds on her final attempt. Shortly after the conclusion of the weigh-ins, UFC officials announced the fight vs. Chiasson (7-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) was canceled.

According to Ladd, her weight miss occurred at least in part due to her period, which she revealed on Instagram began two days prior to weigh-ins. Afraid to “bleed in front of the media,” UFC officials held towels in front of the privacy box to fill the void between the bottom of the box and the ground.

She also added that the fight would’ve continued, had her opponent Chiasson not turned the fight down. “The fight wasn’t pulled, my opponent then decided she would not go through with it, as is her right,” Ladd wrote. Chiasson, meanwhile, has not issued a statement since the bout’s cancellation.

In a lengthier follow-up statement on Twitter, Ladd accepted full responsibility for not hitting her mark on the scale. She apologized to the UFC, Chiasson, and her fans and family.

“I can only say I apologize and I have to do better,” Ladd wrote. “I’ll be better. There are no other options.. as I love this sport and I want to continue to do what I love and be the best… Again I’m sorry. I will be better!”

Ladd and Chiasson were originally scheduled to fight in July, but Chiasson withdraw just before weigh-ins due to a foot injury. Chiasson took exception to Ladd’s criticism over the original cancellation and let that be known during this fight week.

Ladd hasn’t fought since December 2019, a TKO win over Yana Kunitskaya at UFC on ESPN 7.

UFC Fight Night 193 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on ESPN+.
